First State of Matter
The "First State of Matter" mirrors are the result of my quest to develop a feasible product that can be designed, manufactured, and shipped in Switzerland without relying on extensive infrastructure. With a focus on using simple materials like aluminum sheets, the goal is to produce locally, store easily, and ship conveniently. The mirrors possess aesthetic value and character created through a unique process.
The idea for the "First State of Matter" mirrors came to me while I was in a hot bath in Budapest. I had the idea to tilt the cutting head at an angle and see how it would affect various materials. When I tried it in the workshop, I was delighted to see that it worked remarkably well. The angled cut gave the material a rough and torn appearance. When I combined this with a polished and shiny surface, people approached me and asked how I managed to cut mirrors into pieces without them breaking. Through these processes, the properties of the material change so dramatically that it almost seems like magic.
The project is nominated for the Design Prize Switzerland 2023 edition in the Furniture Design category.
